This was a story that was hard to put down. It made me think. It made me look up the Russian Gulag. I learned. I wonder how much was actually fact and how much was creative storytelling. I also now want to know what happened to Josie and her baby. Idea for next book maybe.
I like the time switch she used between Auschwitz and Gulag. You got insight on both places. I liked that Lale and Gita were part of this book as well as Lale giving information about Cilka’s time In Auschwitz as well. I wanted to know what happened to Cilka since The Tattooist of Auschwitz.
People can be so cruel to each other for no reason. It’s difficult to understand why Russia would so vicious and cruel to their own people much less those the deem in need of rehabilitation through hard labor. What was allowed to happen was unbelievable. There seemed to be not real consequences for actions that deserved, yet the things that did have consequences made even less sense. My heart broke several times reading this book. The Russians were no better then the Nazis in that aspect. Yet there were some kind and inspiring characters as well.
I would also like to know what happened to the doctors that helped so much.
I definitely recommend this read.
